Tui Na massage, also known as Amma massage, is a traditional Chinese therapeutic technique that stimulates the flow of Qi* (also pronounced “Chi”) throughout the body. It is often used to help relieve stiffness, discomfort and general physical tension.
Unlike Western massage, Tui Na uses only finger and palm pressure, applied through a wide range of rhythmic and dynamic techniques. It does not involve oils or deep muscle manipulation but focuses instead on specific energy points and channels.
As one of the oldest forms of bodywork in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Tui Na has been practised for thousands of years. It is based on the principle of restoring balance and encouraging the body’s natural ability to heal and regulate itself.
This form of massage involves precise hand movements applied to targeted areas or energy points on the body. The aim is to influence the root cause of tension or imbalance, rather than just the symptoms.
Tui Na massage works with what practitioners call the “Eight Methods of Qi Manipulation,” which may include techniques to:
- Warm and energise the body
- Strengthen and support flow
- Remove blockages
- Promote the elimination of stagnation
- Stimulate circulation and sweating
- Create a sense of harmony
- Disperse excess energy
- Support natural detoxification
Qi (pronounced “Chi”) is a traditional Chinese concept referring to the vital life energy that flows through the body.
